ITINERARY: 7 nights/8 days
DAY 1 Arrival with Atlantic Airways from your destination to Vágar airport on the Faroe Islands. Collect your hire car and drive to Runavík on Eysturoy. We suggest a stop at Oyndarfjørður to see the ‘Rinkusteinarnir’ (rocking stones). These two enormous stones lie close to the coast just before you come to the village. Legend has it that they are two pirate ships, fated to rock backwards and forwards for eternity. Overnight stay in Runavík.
DAY 2 A walk with a local guide around the idyllic lake of Toftavatn, with its unique heather clad hills and rich fl ora. After enjoying your picnic lunch that has been provided, you will visit the historic vicarage in the village of Nes. Overnight stay in Runavík.
DAY 3 On the drive from Runavík to Tórshavn, we recommend a visit to the picturesque village of Saksun that lies hidden from view at the end of the road. The view is exceptional. At one time, the bay was a protected natural harbour but has now fi lled with sand. It is possible to walk across the sand to the sea at low tide. Continue to Tórshavn where you take the ferry ‘Smyril’, to Suðuroy. The 2-hour journey takes you past the islands of Sandoy, Stóra Dímun and Lítla Dímun. Overnight stay on Suðuroy.
DAY 4 Explore the southern part of Suðuroy. We suggest you drive on the mountain road to Sumba and walk a few hundred metres west, where you come to a dramatic precipice and a fantastic panorama with ‘Beinisvørð’ on the left. Drive on to Sumba village and stop at ‘Pollinum’ to see the idyllic boat harbour. Do not miss the lighthouse at Akraberg, Faroe’s most southerly point. The Ruth Smith art gallery in Vágur is also worth a visit and here you will find Sirri, a company that designs clothes made from Faroese wool. Overnight stay on Suðuroy.
DAY 5 Explore the northern part of Suðuroy. Drive to the old village of Sandvík where Sigmundur Brestisson, a Viking chieftain, was killed over 1000 years ago. You can drive or
walk down the gravel road to the freestanding rock called ‘Ásmundarstakkur’. In the village
of Hvalba you can visit the last coal mine still in use despite the lack of modernisation over
the last hundred years. An absolute must, is the short walk called ‘Á Røðina’, which begins
after the tunnel from Hvalba. From here, you will be able to see the island’s dramatic westside. Overnight stay on Suðuroy.
DAY 6 Visit the local tourist information for walking maps and details of the many walks on Suðuroy, for example: to the top of Rávan, Hvannhagi and from Tvøroyri to Famjin. Take the afternoon ferry back to Tórshavn, enjoying the exhibition of works by Faroese artists. Overnight stay in Tórhavn.
DAY 7 Enjoy the day in Tórshavn. We recommend a walk through the old part of town called ‘Tinganes’ and ‘á Reyni’, before visiting the Nordic House. Alternatively, you could walk to Kirkjubø, the cultural heart of the Faroe Islands. Overnight stay in Tórshavn.
DAY 8 Deliver your hire car at the airport prior to your return flight with Atlantic Airways.
